Indian Troops in Afghanistan
There has been a conspiracy theory floating that the Mumbai attack was stragic in nature so that Pakistan Army could find a excuse move it troops from the unpopular western from to the eastern front. I think Pakistan army has succeeded in this and has deployed to Indian border.
Obama in his Presidential campaign has promised troop surge in Afghanistan. US must take a leaf out of the old British military books and ask for troops from India. I am sure they have requested this in the past and India had refused. George Bush has been unpopular and neither the left nor the Muslims in India would like that.
However circumstances have changed. US has a new president and India can supply its troops under UN command. Pakistan has always been afraid of India making deep inroads in Afghan and hence the bombing of Kabul Embassy. India has every right to go into the country to protect is interest.
Going to Kabul is not without its pitfall. In the long run, I do not think it is possible to occupy or instill a Western style democracy in a tribal society. Also the latest news shows that the Taliban has got major hold over the areas in Afghanistan. It will be relatively easy for the Taliban to target Indian troops.
However, this will also be a nightmare for Pakistan as it will have to commit to its forces to Afghanistan. I am sure they will be bluffing the US even now that they will stop all cooperation but as even as I write this, the goods movement to NATO from Khyber pass is all but a tickle and it is nothing but blackmail on the part of Pakistan Army.
Having said this, India should be prepared for a bloody battle in its hands. This is a tactical solution and India politicians should understand this. This is not about Indian aligning with US or UK or against Muslim brotherhood but taking firm action against the powers that created the mayhem in Mumbai.
