A very underrated movie

2006 was one of the golden year in Indian cinema. As an audience we were given a choice of some excellent movies like Rang-de-basanti, Lage-Roho-Munnabhai & Omkar. A movie that came and quickly got withdrawn from movie theater was "Dor"

A movie about two women who are as different as chalk and cheese but who are tied by destiny and the fact that they belong to the under-privilege class in India.

What is most impressive about the movie is not necessary the story as such but way the under-current tensions, the loss of innocence, the companionship come out in the dialogs.

- When a women cannot be friends with a women, what do you expect from men.
- It is good that you realize a the other half of the population is going though.
- I want to cut the throat of the person, who killed my husband, my love, my freedom.
- Your husband may be innocent, but an innocent is bearing the burden of his doing.
- Why should I be an angle while all I want to be a human.
- I am just trying to cover my sins with your good deeds.

The acting by all the characters have not only been apt but outstanding. Often the message that can be conveyed by the eyes and the laughter can be stronger than all the words that can written. Ayesha Takia innocence, Gul Panag resolute vulnerability, Girish Karnad arrogance, Shreyas Talpade versatile banter all added to the drama.

One thing which I really love about any movie is the cinematography. This was a movie that truly celebrated the beauty of India, its valleys, its deserts, its vastness and its diversities. The movie uses not only close angles but by uses very good use of the wide angle to depict the magnitude of the problem.

Nagesh Kukunoor has been one of my favorite Indian directors since his very first movie and with each movie he has matured as a director. He has always delivered a tight story with a deep message but in this movie he put it across some very very beautiful visuals.

A movie that shows that Indians movies are no longer shackled by formula but it among the best.
