Negative criticism in professional enviorment

I do not think anyone enjoys receiving negative criticism and most people do not enjoy giving it either.  As  matter of fact, negative criticism is not looked up in today's professional environment, to the extent that people tend to avoid it like a plague. However the problem remains and often simmers till it becomes something unavoidable. Often this results in out-bursts and more often than not accusations.

Having a difficult conversation like Negative criticism is very crucial but unfortunately this is never taught in any school or even in most offices. Some managers learn the tricks often by very expensive experiences.

While we can talk about how to best give Negative Criticism, here is an interesting article on How to take Criticism well.  One of the underlying thought is to be able to ask for examples and data, go back and analyse the data before you react to it. Also remember the other person has not necessarily enjoyed giving it.
However you may have a case where someone gives excess on Negative criticism. In which case, it helps to ask the person
1. for concrete example (This helps the person think through his criticism)
2. for finding out if the problem is something else. (Often the person may be criticising you for another problem he or she may have). Finding the root problem helps.

Immediate confrontation rarely helps. But giving your side of the story in a precise manner with Data, without blaming others or getting angry often helps. Finally you need to use this opportunity to genuinely improve yourself.
