New Mediums of Communication

After two decades of maintaining a presence on Google’s blogging platforms (Blogspot and Blogger), I’ve decided to migrate my content to Medium. While my writing cadence has been measured rather than prolific, this transition reflects a broader shift in the digital publishing landscape. Google’s relative neglect of its blogging infrastructure stands in stark contrast to the rising dominance of platforms like WordPress, Medium, and Substack, which have effectively captured the space where Google once held home-field advantage.

This transformation arguably stems from Google’s strategic emphasis on advertising and content demand rather than content publishing and curation. Yet, the company’s successful stewardship of YouTube demonstrates the inherent value of controlling both the publishing and distribution channels in digital media. This dichotomy illuminates a missed opportunity in Google’s approach to written content platforms.
