Leading Amazon's First AI-Powered Reading Enhancement Feature

I'm excited to share a significant milestone - successfully leading the Kindle Series Recap project from concept to customer delivery over the past year.

What we built: Amazon's first long-form content summarization feature, helping millions of Kindle readers seamlessly continue their favorite book series without losing track of complex storylines and characters.

The technical challenge: This wasn't just a feature launch - it was pioneering entirely new territory. We built enterprise-scale GenAI capabilities from the ground up, including:

  • Novel LLM-based summarization pipelines with automated quality evaluation and manual oversight
  • Real-time cross-platform synchronization systems
  • Safety, faithfulness, and comprehensiveness validation at scale
  • First-of-its-kind "online-only" Kindle e-reader experience

The impact that matters most: Within weeks of launch, thousands of customers provided feedback with near-unanimous positive response - a key risk that had kept us on edge throughout development and something I'm most proud of today. The feature also sparked 100+ media stories and genuine delight across reading communities.

The accelerated journey: Every challenge taught us something crucial about productionizing GenAI at Amazon's scale and quality standards. Through initial concept pivots and scaling operations, we achieved deployment readiness in under 6 months. Each step built our understanding of what it takes to deliver AI that truly serves customers while establishing foundational capabilities for our next initiatives.

The incredible team: This achievement belongs to a cross-functional team of engineers, scientists, operations specialists, and editorial experts spanning Seattle, Madrid, and Chennai. Their collaboration across time zones, disciplines, and technical domains made this ambitious vision a reality.

What started as an idea inspired by existing Kindle feature usage evolved into a foundational capability that opens doors for future innovations in reading technology.

Grateful for the opportunity to lead this initiative and excited about what's next in the intersection of AI and digital reading experiences.

In my next few blogs, I will write some of my key learning on scaling GenAI and bringing them to production at scale.
